Working with local schools

The farm is not just for the students of the colleges.  One of our longest running efforts has been in environmental education, working with local elementary schools and high schools both at the farm and helping to create their own gardens.   College students working at the farm have created relationships with these schools, designing programs with weekly tours, workshops, and visits to the farm.  As part of an experimental new curriculum at the colleges in the spring of 2003, a Pomona student created a class that included teaching Permaculture to students at the local San Antonio High School, as well as helping them design and create their own garden.

The visiting children have been an incredible resource for the farm.  Not only does it allow our students a hands-on approach to environmental education, but it allows us to share our knowledge and the farm with local families.  Many of the children who visit the farm with their classes bring their parents and families back to the farm after their visits, even later that day, to share what they have learned and show what they have done.  We have dedicated areas of the garden and composting system to the children's efforts, and we hope to continue their visits and projects.
