Pomona College's student-run organic garden and learning center The Pomona College Organic Farm is a 2.5-acre, student-run farm in the southwest corner of Pomona College campus, part of the Claremont Colleges. We are located in Claremont, CA, 35 miles east of Los Angeles. We are devoted to the study and implementation of sustainable and regenerative practices. Here students have created a large garden of sub-tropical, desert and traditional fruit trees, perennial shrubs, berries, herbs, flowers and annual vegetables. These drip-irrigated trees and plots are tended by many student and community volunteers, as well as students enrolled in such classes as "The Politics of Food and Agriculture," "The Politics of Water," "The Politics of Environmental Activism," "Environmental Studies," and numerous faculty-led independent studies. Food from this garden is cooked by students for events open to the school and community, as well as donated to local food groups and a CSA (Community Share Agriculture) Program. Students also recycle the school's green waste to produce valuable compost, thereby reducing landfill waste. The farm seeks to provide an example of local, organic food production and wholesome community service. Our mission is to provide the students, faculty, staff, and community members of Claremont with a means for educational exploration in the fields of Permaculture, organic farming, biodynamic growing methods, alternative architecture, and sustainability. We grow fruits, vegetables, herbs, vines, and flowers, using the most of what we can from our local surroundings. As an alternative to conventional agricultural production methods, we grow food using polycultures, no-till growing, and chemical-free methods. Aside from producing a bountiful harvest of delicious organic food year-round, The Farm has become a place of community, a place of learning, and a place of exploration beyond the conventional university classroom. We strive to promote the values of community, sustainable living, and the production and consumption of local goods, as well as serve as an educational resource and research tool for the college community.
